NVIDIA has made headlines with the official release of the RTX 4090D, stepping in as a direct successor to the RTX 4090 model, which encountered importation challenges in China. This move comes as a strategic pivot for NVIDIA, who must navigate the complexities of trade restrictions in a crucial market. Instead of introducing the anticipated RTX 4080 SUPER as its top-tier offering, NVIDIA has revised the RTX 4090 model to align with the U.S. trade regulations affecting GPU shipments to China.

In a surprising twist that deviates from early conjecture, NVIDIA has revealed that the RTX 4090D will see a reduction in its core count, dropping from 16384 to 14592 cores. This adjustment marks a significant shift in the product’s specifications. Likewise, the Tensor core count has been decreased to 456, a slight reduction from the previously reported 512. This reconfiguration represents NVIDIA’s strategic response to maintain its presence in global markets while adhering to regulatory requirements.

In terms of memory performance, the new graphics card remains on par with its predecessor, equipped with 24GB of GDDR6X memory, boasting a speed of 21 Gbps, and interfaced through a 384-bit bus. The memory specs remain unchanged, ensuring consistent performance. Notably, the graphics card has undergone an efficiency enhancement with its Thermal Design Power (TDP) now at 425W, which is a 25W decrease from the previous version, showcasing an improvement in energy consumption.

As various manufacturers present their versions of the graphics card, it’s clear that the design language follows closely that of the original RTX 4090 series. The aesthetics of most cards are virtually identical to the first iterations. There’s no deviation in retail pricing either, with the card holding steady at a price point of 12,999 RMB. A notable omission, however, is the lack of a factory-overclocking feature across the newly released cards, a departure from what might have been expected.
