GPD has formally confirmed that existing product will be updated to AMD’s newer APU series

GPD has officially announced an upgrade across its range of portable devices, confirming industry speculations through their social media channels. The next generation of GPD handhelds will harness the processing power of the AMD Ryzen 7 8840U APU, introducing a significant performance boost to the lineup.

The Ryzen 7 8840U is engineered with eight Zen4 cores and features 12 RDNA3 Compute Units, marking it as an APU crafted specifically for the needs of lightweight and compact systems. Its design caters to portable gaming device manufacturers seeking high efficiency, particularly beneficial for those unable to integrate the Ryzen Z1 series.

The 8840U is essentially an enhanced iteration of the Ryzen 7 7840U APU, boasting a 60% increase in XDNA1 AI core speed, a detail that promises to keep the gaming performance at its peak without affecting the system’s compact form factor.

The refresh will see the following GPD models transitioning to the newer, more powerful APU, setting a new benchmark for handheld gaming performance and efficiency:

  • The 2023 GPD Win Mini will evolve into the Win Max Mini, equipped with the 8840U, by 2024.
  • The GPD WIN Max, a flagship model from 2023, will upgrade to the same APU for its 2024 iteration.
  • Lastly, the GPD WIN 4, known for its versatility, will also make the leap to the Ryzen 7 8840U APU in its 2024 version.

As of now, GPD has not yet confirmed if its 7640U-based systems will receive an upgrade to the 8640U variant. However, they have guaranteed that the eight-core versions will be getting an update.

In the competitive landscape of portable gaming, GPD follows in the footsteps of AYANEO, announcing that its 2024 product roster will include the Ryzen 8840U APU. The AYANEO Flip is poised to offer models with both the 7840U and 8840U APUs, catering to a range of performance preferences and market demands.
