The European Commission has set a deadline of December 1 for Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook) and Snap Inc. to provide additional details regarding their efforts to protect children from illegal and harmful content on their platforms.
This request for information about the measures taken by these companies to enhance child safety comes in response to similar directives given to Alphabet’s YouTube and TikTok by the European Union. It highlights the pressing need to address concerns about child safety in the digital space.
In the previous month, the Commission issued urgent directives to companies like Meta, X (presumably referring to Google’s parent company Alphabet), and TikTok, demanding a comprehensive account of the actions they have taken to combat the spread of content related to terrorism, violence, and hate speech on their platforms.
Should the Commission find their responses inadequate, it retains the authority to initiate investigations into these companies.
Recent enforcement of the Digital Services Act (DSA) has empowered major online platforms to intensify their efforts in removing illegal and harmful content. These platforms now face the potential threat of fines amounting to up to 6% of their global turnover if they fail to comply with the regulations outlined in the DSA.
